Description

Designer: Dondi Szombatfalvy Company: Sims Interiors The original kitchen occupied a small corner of the home, with the refrigerator, sink, dishwasher, and range all compressed into roughly a 10’ x 8’ area. Storage was limited, countertop space was scarce, and the layout made it difficult for more than one person to cook comfortably. Because the homeowners enjoy cooking together and frequently entertain family and friends, creating a larger, more functional kitchen became the primary goal of the remodel. Opening the space required significant structural work. A 26-foot flush beam was installed to remove walls separating the kitchen from the surrounding living areas. The beam was large enough that an existing window had to be removed to bring it into the home, and a crew of six was needed for installation. Additional structural support created a bump-out along the exterior wall, which ultimately became the perfect location for the television and improved visibility from both the kitchen and living room. Removing the walls completely changed how the space functions. A large island was added to provide prep space, seating, storage, and a natural gathering place for guests. The new layout improved the work triangle and allowed for the addition of a wall oven, convection microwave, and induction cooktop, giving the homeowners the cooking amenities they wanted without sacrificing workspace. Storage planning was a major focus throughout the design. A shallow-depth pantry near the back entry increased food storage without overwhelming the room. Integrated cabinetry accessories, including drawer dividers, spice storage, waste and recycling pull-outs, and vertical tray storage above the refrigerator, help keep frequently used items organized and accessible. A window seat with storage below adds both function and character while making use of an area that would otherwise have been underutilized. Fabuwood Allure Galaxy cabinetry in Indigo became the defining feature of the kitchen. The rich cabinet color provides contrast against the light oak-look flooring, white subway tile, and light quartz countertops while complementing the home’s existing woodwork. Extending the cabinetry to the ceiling maximized storage and created a built-in appearance that helps anchor the room. The completed kitchen feels dramatically larger than the original space while remaining warm and inviting. The island and window seat naturally define the kitchen area within the open floor plan, creating a space that is equally suited for everyday cooking, family gatherings, and entertaining.
