When it comes to West Coast style, nobody does it better than California-based Kerrie Kelly. As Fabuwood’s Creative Director and founder of Kerrie Kelly Studio, she is known for modern designs that balance light, texture, and a deep connection to nature.

In a recent interview, Kerrie gave us an inside look at what makes West Coast design so iconic and her top tips for bringing the effortless style into your home.

Let the Sunshine In

According to Kerrie, “There’s a certain light on the West Coast- things just look different here.” The natural brightness and incredible sunshine on the West Coast invite an aesthetic that’s light, bright, and easy. One of the latest kitchen design trends of 2025 is warm, organic materials and gentle colors.

Pro Tip: Instead of stark white, try soft neutrals like Luna Linen paired with natural textures. Even a textured backsplash can transform your space into a serene oasis.

Texture is Everything

Kerrie emphasizes that West Coast design leans monochromatic but never flat. How? Layering in texture like weathered woods, matte finishes, and textiles for visual interest.

Pro Tip: Keep the color palette simple and add grainy wood cabinets like Catalina Muratti 1, linen curtains, or a statement feature wall.

Dip into Color

After years of all-white everything, Kerrie says homeowners are trying out color, starting out small then moving onto bolder choices. Patterned backsplashes and natural-toned accents like greens and blues are popular. “Colors we find in nature are being brought into the space for an updated white kitchen,” says Kerrie.

Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid of color! A Pistachio Green pantry or a Denim Blue island adds life to your space without overwhelming.

Go Slim and Stylish

One of Kerrie’s favorite cabinet styles? Luna’s slim shaker style in natural Timber. It has a fresh and modern vibe, but it can also work in traditional homes. “The grain, the organic material, is not a huge commitment,” she says, “but it brings warmth and updates your kitchen instantly.”

Pro Tip: Blend Frost white cabinets with wood elements for a clean and organic feel.

Design Every Space

Kerrie designed the Party Barn at KBIS 2025, showcasing how cabinets can be used in various spaces beyond the kitchen. Think about using cabinets in the garage, mudrooms, and more!

Pro Tip: Treat every space, even the barn or garage, as an extension of your home. Add lighting, storage, and color to places you might usually gloss over.

Bring the Outdoors In – and the Indoors Out

West Coast style is all about nature. Kerrie loves using colors and textures from the beach, mountains, and sky in her designs. The result is a space that feels calm, stylish, welcoming, and totally California.

Pro Tip: Look outdoors for color inspiration. Use a deep Hunter Green, cool Sage Green, or any custom color influenced by the serenity of nature.
